Postdoctoral Associate
The Design, Research, and Education for Additive Manufacturing Systems (DREAMS) Lab in Virginia Tech's Department of Mechanical Engineering conducts research across the value chain of Additive Manufacturing (AM, also referred to as "3D Printing") technologies ().
The DREAMS Lab is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to engage in an industrially-sponsored project related to additive manufacturing (AM, also referred to as "3D Printing") of high performance polymers, ceramics, and carbonaceous materials. Specifically, the researcher will explore the Vat Photopolymerization (VP, also referred to as "stereolithography") AM process to expand on the lab's recent research in processing fully aromatic polyimides (doi: 10.1002/adma.201701240; doi: 10.1021/acsmacrolett.8b00126) and ceramics.
The research is inherently multi-disciplinary and will involve close collaboration with synthetic polymer chemists and mechanical engineers to explore the process-property-structure relationships in VP processes. Ideal candidates would have experience and expertise in AM processes, (photo)polymers, and material characterization. The researcher will be responsible for resin development, process parameter optimization, printing, post-processing, and characterization of photopolymer suspensions of ceramics and polyimide precursors. Responsibilities
o Participate in researching and developing resin formulations of advanced engineering materials (e.g., high-temperature polymers, ceramics, and carbonaceous materials) suitable for Vat Photopolymerization (VP)
o Create and characterize the raw materials and the resultant printed parts
o Characterize and model the process-property-structure relationships for printing and post-process operations for the new materials
o Contribute as a team member on a transdisciplinary project
o Work independently as a researcher and scholar to create research plans, procedures, and peer-reviewed manuscripts
o Assist in mentoring graduate and undergraduate student researchers
o Assist in preparation of scholarly manuscripts and research proposals
o Communicate with external visitors and federal/industrial project sponsors
o Ensure laboratory safety standards are being met and serve as a safety liaison with Virginia Tech's Environmental Health and Safety office.
